The Kirkwood, Missouri Tragedy

On the night of February 7, 2008, a lone gunman entered Kirkwood, Missouri council chambers during a council meeting and brutally murdered six people, including two councilmembers, the public works director, and two police officers. The mayor was critically injured and later died as a result of the injuries. The shooter had a long history of disputes with city officials.

John Hessel, City Attorney for Kirkwood, Missouri, recently recounted these tragic events at a municipal attorneys training session. A video of Mr. Hessel's discussion that was shown at the League's recent Certified Municipal Officials program has generated so many requests for copies that the League has decided to make copies of this powerful presentation available to our members.
