Effective January 1, 2011, Alabama Municipal Court Judges must complete a minimum of six hours of continuing judicial education (including one hour of judicial ethics) specifically relating to municipal court practice and procedure per calendar year. Newly appointed Municipal Court Judges must complete six hours of mandatory judicial education requirements within the first year of their appointment to the office. Judicial education credits for each municipal judge must be reported in writing to the AJC director by December 31 of each year.
The Rules for Mandatory Continuing Judicial Education for Alabama Municipal Court Judges are available here.
The Alabama Municipal Judges Association (AMJA) organized as a section of the Alabama League of Municipalities (ALM) at the AMJA annual meeting on November 9, 2007. AMJA was created to serve and benefit municipal judges throughout the State of Alabama. The goals of AMJA are to foster communication and education for municipal judges in order to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of Alabama's municipal courts.
All Alabama municipal judges, full-time or part-time, are eligible for full membership in AMJA. The cost for a full membership is $75.00 for each calendar year.
AMJA members enjoy benefits such as:
- Reduced conference attendance rates; and
- Access to the ALM legal department and current legal developments including legislation and case law.
AMJA membership dues also enable the Association to bring in recognized national and regional experts to speak on topics of interest to municipal judges.
